Introduction

The engine is one of the most important and scrutinised elements of any boat purchase. Understanding the different engine configurations — how they work, what they cost to maintain, and what suits different vessel types — helps you evaluate listings accurately and ask the right questions during a viewing. Diesel vs. Petrol (Gasoline)

Before looking at configurations, the choice of fuel type sets the context for everything else.

Diesel Engines

The diesel engine is standard for cruising and offshore use. Diesel engines are:

Safer — Diesel fuel has a much higher flash point than petrol (~56°C vs ~-43°C). Diesel vapour does not accumulate in the bilge in the way that petrol vapour can, eliminating the risk of explosive gas build-up.
More fuel-efficient — Diesel engines extract more energy per litre than petrol equivalents, giving better range per tank.
More durable — Well-maintained marine diesels regularly achieve 5,000–10,000+ hours of service life.
Lower fuel cost — Diesel is typically cheaper per litre than petrol and available at most commercial marinas worldwide.

Common marine diesel brands include Yanmar, Volvo Penta, Perkins, Cummins, and Beta Marine.

Petrol (Gasoline) Engines

Petrol engines are most common in outboard motors and smaller recreational powerboats. They offer higher power-to-weight ratios at low cost, making them practical for trailerable boats where engine weight matters. The fire and explosion risk from petrol vapour requires careful ventilation of the engine compartment — this is why petrol-powered boats have mandatory bilge blowers that must be run before starting the engine. Petrol engines typically have a shorter service life than marine diesels.

Drive Configurations

Outboard Motors

An outboard motor is a self-contained propulsion unit — engine, gearbox, and propeller — mounted externally on the transom. The entire unit steers by rotating, eliminating the need for a separate rudder on smaller vessels.

Advantages:

Simple to remove and service on shore
Full engine replacement is straightforward (unbolt the old, bolt on the new)
No through-hull fittings required for the drive
Compact — frees up interior space
Tilts up for beach landing and storage

Considerations:

Exposed to weather and spray at the transom
Less fuel-efficient at high hours than an equivalent diesel inboard
Most common in petrol; diesel outboards exist but are expensive
Power range limited for very large vessels

Inboard Engines (Straight Shaft)

The most common configuration for cruising sailboats and larger powerboats. The engine is mounted inside the hull, connected by a propeller shaft that exits through a stern gland in the hull bottom to an external propeller. The vessel steers using a separate rudder.

Advantages:

Reliable, proven technology
Well-protected engine — inside the hull, away from spray and UV
Efficient at cruising speeds with a fixed or feathering propeller
Long service life when correctly maintained

Considerations:

The stern gland (shaft seal) requires periodic adjustment and replacement
Propeller and cutlass bearing require haul-out to inspect and replace
Fixed propellers create drag when sailing (feathering or folding props reduce this)

Typical use: Cruising sailboats, displacement motor yachts, trawlers. The dominant engine type across our sailboat listings.

Saildrive

A saildrive is a variation of the inboard engine where the drive leg passes directly through the hull bottom rather than using a traditional propeller shaft. The engine sits further forward than in a straight-shaft installation, and the drive leg includes the gearbox and propeller.

Advantages:

More installation flexibility — engine position is less constrained
No propeller shaft or stern gland to maintain
Smooth, low-vibration drive
Common on Volvo Penta and Yanmar installations in production sailboats

Considerations:

The saildrive leg bellows (the rubber seal where the leg passes through the hull) must be inspected and replaced every 5–7 years — failure can cause rapid flooding
The leg is vulnerable to damage in a grounding or from floating debris

Typical use: Production cruising sailboats (Beneteau, Jeanneau, Bavaria, Hanse, etc.).

Stern Drive (I/O — Inboard/Outboard)

A stern drive combines an inboard engine with an outboard-style drive unit (the outdrive) that passes through the transom. The outdrive steers and tilts like an outboard, giving excellent manoeuvrability. Volvo Penta Duoprop and MerCruiser are the dominant brands.

Advantages:

Excellent manoeuvrability — steers and tilts
No rudder required
Good performance across a range of speeds
Can tilt the outdrive up in shallow water

Considerations:

The outdrive is submerged and requires careful antifouling and regular inspection
Bellows and seals on the outdrive are maintenance items — failures can cause water ingress
Higher maintenance cost than a straight-shaft inboard

Typical use: Sports cruisers, express boats, ski boats, smaller motor yachts.

Pod Drives

Pod drives (Volvo Penta IPS, ZF Pods) are inboard engines connected to articulating drive pods that protrude through the hull bottom. The pods rotate 360 degrees and are joystick-controlled, making docking and low-speed manoeuvring extremely precise. Twin or quad pod installations are common on larger motor yachts.

Advantages:

Exceptional manoeuvrability — joystick control, can move sideways
More fuel-efficient than conventional shafts at cruise speed (forward-facing propellers pull rather than push)
Reduced vibration and noise

Considerations:

Expensive to service and repair — specialist knowledge required
Pods are exposed below the hull and vulnerable to grounding damage
Higher initial cost than conventional inboard installations

Typical use: Larger motor yachts (40ft+), where manoeuvrability in marinas is a priority.

Twin Engines

Many larger motorboats and some sailing cats are fitted with twin engines — two independent propulsion systems. Twin engines provide redundancy (if one fails, the other gets you home) and dramatically improve manoeuvrability at low speed by running one engine forward and one astern to spin the boat on its axis. The trade-off is double the fuel consumption, double the maintenance cost, and double the complexity.

For catamarans, one engine per hull is standard — each drives its respective hull and together provide excellent directional control.

Electric Propulsion

Electric motors are increasingly available as primary or hybrid propulsion on smaller vessels and as an emerging option on sailing yachts. An electric inboard connected to a bank of lithium batteries provides silent, zero-emission propulsion — ideal for short passages, entering harbour, and anchoring areas with noise restrictions. Range is currently limited compared to diesel, and recharging requires solar, wind generation, or shore power. The market is developing rapidly and electric options are appearing in our listings with increasing frequency.

What to Check When Evaluating an Engine in a Listing

Make and model — Identifies parts availability and service network. Yanmar, Volvo Penta, and Beta Marine have excellent global support.

Service history — When was it last serviced and what was replaced? Ask for documentation.
Drive type — Straight shaft, saildrive, stern drive, or pod? Each has different maintenance implications.
Number of engines — Single or twin? Relevant to fuel costs, manoeuvrability, and redundancy.
