Introduction

Buying your first boat is exciting — and it's easy to let that excitement override careful due diligence. This checklist gives you ten essential things to verify before you make an offer. Print it out, bring it to every viewing, and take notes as you go. The hour you spend on this inspection could save you from a very expensive mistake.

1. Check the Bilge

The bilge is the lowest internal space of the hull. It should contain little to no water. Open the bilge inspection panels and shine a torch inside.

Small amount of water — acceptable if the bilge pump has been used recently; some condensation is normal.
Significant standing water — a red flag. Ask where it's coming from. Could be a leaking stern gland, a failing seacock, or water ingress through the deck.
Oily water — suggests an engine oil leak or fuel contamination. Investigate immediately.
Foul smell — could indicate a holding tank leak or black water system problem.

While in the bilge area, check the condition of the stringers (internal structural members) — they should be solid and firmly bonded to the hull, not soft or delaminated.

2. Press the Decks and Cockpit Sole

Walk slowly around the entire deck, pressing down with your foot or the heel of your hand every half metre or so. You are feeling for soft spots — areas where the deck core (usually balsa or foam) has become waterlogged and lost its structural integrity. Pay particular attention to:

Around deck fittings (cleats, winches, stanchion bases) where water can enter through poorly bedded hardware
The cockpit sole and seats
The foredeck, which takes wave impact
Around the mast base and chainplates

A soft deck is not an automatic dealbreaker, but repairs can be expensive (£2,000–£10,000+ for significant areas). Make sure it's reflected in the price.

3. Inspect the Keel and Keel Bolts (Sailboats)

The keel is literally what keeps the boat upright. A loose or failing keel is a serious safety issue. Look for:

Rust staining around the keel/hull join — brown or orange streaks on the hull near where the keel meets the bottom often indicate corroding keel bolts.
Cracking in the gelcoat at the keel/hull interface — can indicate stress from a grounding or keel movement.
Inside the boat: find the keel bolt nuts and check for rust, water staining, or movement. Good bolts should be tight and dry.
Gap between keel and hull — even a small gap visible underwater can indicate a structural problem.

Keel remediation is serious and expensive work. Flag any concerns to your surveyor.

4. Check the Engine Condition

Even if you know nothing about engines, these visual checks reveal a lot:

Oil on the dipstick — should be within the min/max range and be clean brown/black, not milky white (which indicates water contamination — a serious problem).
Coolant reservoir — should be at the correct level and clear, not brown or rusty.
Engine mounts — look for oil pooled around the base of the engine, suggesting leaking seals.
Hoses and belts — cracked or perished hoses are a maintenance item; check the condition of the raw water hose to the impeller especially.
Exhaust elbow — a frequently replaced item on marine diesels; check for heavy corrosion or rust staining.
Fuel tank and fuel lines — look for rust on steel tanks or crazing on plastic tanks. Fuel line fittings should be tight and leak-free.

Ask how many hours are on the engine and when it was last serviced. Ask to see the service log.

5. Test All Seacocks

Seacocks are the valves that control openings through the hull — engine cooling water, cockpit drains, toilet inlets, and outlets. A seized seacock that cannot be closed is a serious safety hazard: if a connected hose fails while the boat is afloat, you cannot stop the water ingress without the seacock working.

Locate every through-hull fitting and its associated seacock.
Try to operate each one — it should turn smoothly through 90 degrees. Stiff or completely seized seacocks are common and must be serviced or replaced.
Check the condition of the hoses connected to each seacock — they should be firm, not soft or cracked.
Look for corrosion or dezincification on bronze fittings (pink coloration indicates the zinc has leached out, leaving the fitting weak).

6. Inspect the Electrical System

Electrical faults are the leading cause of boat fires. You don't need to be an electrician to spot the most obvious problems:

Battery installation — Batteries should be in sealed, acid-proof boxes and firmly secured. A battery bouncing around in its box is a fire risk.
Wiring runs — Open any accessible panels and look at the wiring. It should be neatly routed, protected by conduit or loom, and terminate in labelled connections. A mass of unprotected wires with tape-repaired joins is a bad sign.
Fuse panel — Every circuit should be individually fused. Unfused wiring runs directly from the battery to devices are a fire hazard.
Corrosion — Greenish corrosion on connectors and terminals is common but indicates a poorly maintained electrical system. Left unchecked, corroded connections cause resistance, heat, and fire.
Test the basics — Turn on the navigation lights, cabin lights, chart plotter, and VHF radio. Do they all work?

7. Check the Standing Rigging (Sailboats)

The standing rigging (shrouds, forestay, backstay, and any inner stays) holds the mast up. If it fails at sea, you lose the mast. Up close, look for:

Broken strands — Individual broken wires in a strand of stainless wire are called "meat hooks." Even one broken strand means the wire should be replaced immediately.
Swage terminal condition — The fittings where the wire terminates. Cracks, corrosion, or rust staining from the swage socket are common failure points.
Toggle and clevis pin wear — Elongated holes in toggles indicate fatigue and are a sign of imminent failure.
Age — Rigging older than 10–12 years should be replaced regardless of appearance. Ask when it was last replaced.

If the mast is stepped (in the boat) and you can't inspect the rigging closely, ask whether a recent professional rig inspection has been carried out.

8. Verify the Safety Equipment

Check that the following are present, in date, and in good condition:

Life raft — Check the service label on the container. Most life rafts require annual or three-yearly servicing. An out-of-date life raft may not deploy or inflate correctly.
EPIRB — Check the registration sticker and battery expiry date. An EPIRB must be registered with the national authority to be of use when activated.
Flares — Expiry date is printed on each flare. The legal requirement in most countries is a minimum number of in-date flares.
Fire extinguishers — Check the gauge and service date. A discharged or out-of-date extinguisher is useless.
Life jackets / harnesses — Check auto-inflation mechanisms and service dates. Ensure there is one per berth.
Jackstays and tethers — Check condition and attachment points.

Out-of-date safety equipment is not a dealbreaker — factor the replacement cost into your offer — but a boat with nothing in date is a sign of broader maintenance neglect.

9. Ask About the History and Documentation

These questions are important and most sellers will answer honestly:

Has the boat ever been aground? — Groundings can cause hidden keel, rudder, and hull damage.
Has it ever been in a collision or serious incident? — Any major repair should be disclosed and documented.
Is there outstanding finance on the vessel? — You cannot take clear title to a boat that has a charge registered against it. Verify this before exchanging.
Is VAT paid? — In the EU, a boat on which VAT is not paid carries a significant tax liability for the buyer.
Are there any known ongoing issues? — Ask directly. Most sellers will be honest if asked straightforwardly.
Can you see the engine logbook and service records? — Documented service history is a strong positive indicator.

10. Assess the Overall Standard of Maintenance

Step back and look at the boat holistically. How has the owner taken care of it?

Is the topsides clean and well-maintained, or scuffed and neglected?
Is the interior clean and dry, or damp and musty?
Are the winches smooth, or stiff and unserviced?
Is the running rigging neatly stowed and in good condition?
Are locker interiors clean, or full of rusting tools and forgotten equipment?

A well-maintained boat speaks to an owner who cares. A boat where the cosmetics are polished but the bilge is filthy and the engine is rusty is one where effort has gone into selling, not maintaining. Overall presentation quality is a reliable indicator of the quality of maintenance you can't see.
