Electrical Systems on Boats: What Buyers Should Know

A boat's electrical system is one of the most important — and most overlooked — areas when buying a used vessel. Faulty wiring causes fires, failed electronics leave you without navigation, and a dead battery bank can strand you at sea. Yet electrical systems are rarely visible and often poorly documented. This guide explains how boat electrics work, what to look for when buying, and what a marine surveyor will check.

The Two Electrical Systems on a Boat

Most boats have two distinct electrical systems running side by side. Understanding how they differ is the starting point for everything else.

DC (Direct Current) System: 12V or 24V

The backbone of any boat's electrical system is a low-voltage DC network, almost always 12 volts on recreational boats and 24 volts on larger or more power-hungry vessels. This system powers the day-to-day essentials: navigation lights, chart plotter, VHF radio, bilge pumps, autopilot, cabin lighting, and the engine starter motor.

Within the DC system there are typically two separate battery banks:

Starter battery — a dedicated battery whose sole purpose is to crank the engine. It delivers a large burst of current and is then recharged by the alternator while the engine runs. It should never be used to power cabin loads.
Domestic (house) battery bank — one or more batteries that power all hotel loads when the engine is off. This bank is cycled deeply and regularly, so it must be built from batteries rated for deep-cycle use.

The two banks are kept separate by a battery isolator or split-charge relay, which allows the alternator to charge both banks without letting the house bank drain the starter battery. On well-set-up boats a battery management system or voltage-sensing relay manages this automatically.

AC (Alternating Current) System: 230V or 110V

Larger boats — and many smaller cruisers — also carry a 230V (Europe/UK) or 110V (North America) AC system. This powers high-draw appliances such as an electric kettle, microwave, air conditioning, battery charger, and power tools. AC power reaches the boat in two ways:

Shore power — a cable from a marina pedestal plugged into an inlet on the boat's hull.
Generator — a diesel or petrol generator on board that produces AC independently of shore connection.

The AC system must be completely isolated from the water around the boat. Leakage current into marina water causes electric shock drowning — a genuine danger — and accelerates galvanic corrosion. A properly installed AC system includes a galvanic isolator or isolation transformer at the shore power inlet.

Battery Types: Pros and Cons

The type of batteries fitted affects performance, maintenance, lifespan, and cost. Three technologies dominate the recreational marine market.

Flooded Lead-Acid (FLA)

The traditional choice. Flooded cells are the cheapest to buy and well understood by most boatyards. They tolerate overcharging better than sealed types and can be reconditioned if accidentally discharged. The downsides are significant: they require regular checking and topping up with distilled water, they off-gas hydrogen when charging (so need ventilation), they are heavy, and they must be mounted upright. Cycle life is modest — typically 300–500 cycles to 50% depth of discharge.

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat)

AGM batteries are sealed, maintenance-free, and can be mounted in any orientation. They charge faster than flooded cells, tolerate vibration well, and do not off-gas under normal charging. They are more expensive than FLA but are currently the most common upgrade found on mid-range used boats. Expect 500–800 cycles to 50% depth of discharge with proper management.

Lithium (LiFePO4)

Lithium iron phosphate batteries are now found on modern cruisers and performance boats. They offer dramatically higher usable capacity (80–100% vs 50% for lead-acid), significantly lower weight, and 2,000–5,000 cycles. Their flat discharge curve means voltage stays consistent until almost fully discharged. The downsides are high upfront cost, sensitivity to overcharging (requiring a dedicated battery management system), and incompatibility with many older alternators and chargers without modifications. A boat with a well-installed lithium system is a genuine asset; a poorly integrated one is a liability.

Charging Sources

A healthy boat has multiple ways to replenish the battery bank.

Alternator

The engine alternator is the primary charging source when underway. Most standard alternators are undersized relative to large house banks and charge at high rates only for a short window before tapering off. An external regulator (such as a Balmar or Wakespeed unit) can optimise alternator output and protect the battery. Check whether an external regulator is fitted, and whether the alternator is sized appropriately for the battery bank.

Solar Panels

Solar has become standard on cruising boats. A typical installation might be 200–600W on a sailboat, controlled by an MPPT charge controller. Solar is silent, requires no fuel, and can maintain the battery bank indefinitely when at anchor. Check the age and condition of panels and whether the charge controller is matched to the battery chemistry.

Wind Generator

A wind generator supplements solar in cloudy or high-latitude conditions. Output is variable and lower than solar in calm weather, but wind generators charge through the night. They add weight aloft and can be noisy. Common on offshore cruising sailboats.

Shore Power Charger (Battery Charger)

When connected to a marina, a mains-powered battery charger refills the bank automatically. Modern smart chargers adjust charge rate and profile to the battery type. Confirm the charger is rated for the battery bank size and is set to the correct chemistry profile — a charger set to flooded profile on AGM batteries will shorten their life.

Key Navigation Electronics

Navigation electronics are among the most expensive items on a boat and are central to safety. Here is what each system does and why it matters.

Chart Plotter

A chart plotter combines GPS position with digital charts to show the boat's location on a moving map. It is the primary navigation tool on most modern boats. Check the age of the charts loaded — outdated charts can show incorrect depths, missing sandbanks, or obsolete harbour layouts. Chart plotters from major brands (Garmin, Raymarine, Furuno, Navionics-compatible units) support chart subscriptions for updates.

VHF Radio with DSC

A VHF radio is the primary means of communication with other vessels, the coastguard, and marinas. Digital Selective Calling (DSC) is a distress signalling protocol built into modern VHF sets. When connected to GPS, pressing the distress button on a DSC-equipped radio transmits the vessel's identity and position to all nearby vessels and rescue coordination centres simultaneously. A fixed VHF with DSC is a legal requirement in many jurisdictions and an absolute safety essential. Check that it is registered with an MMSI number and that GPS is connected to it.

AIS (Automatic Identification System)

The Automatic Identification System broadcasts and receives vessel identity, position, speed, and course over VHF frequencies. A Class B AIS transponder means commercial ships can see you on their radar and chart plotter displays — critically important in shipping lanes and poor visibility. An AIS receiver shows traffic around you. Having an AIS transponder (not just a receiver) is strongly recommended for any bluewater or coastal cruising.

GPS

Standalone GPS units have largely been replaced by GPS integrated into chart plotters and VHF radios. Check that the GPS antenna has a clear view of the sky and that position is shared with the VHF for DSC capability.

Autopilot

An autopilot steers the boat to a set heading or, when connected to a chart plotter, to a waypoint. It dramatically reduces fatigue on long passages and allows the crew to navigate, make food, or handle sail changes. Autopilots consist of a control head, a compass or course computer, and a drive unit (tiller ram, wheel drive, or hydraulic ram). Autopilots are expensive to replace — check that the drive unit is appropriate for the boat's steering system and that all components are from the same generation and manufacturer.

Radar

Radar detects physical objects — land, ships, rain — regardless of visibility. It is essential in fog and for night passages in busy waters. Radomes (dome radars) are common on motorboats and cruising sailboats. Check the age of the unit; older magnetron radars still work well but consume more power and warm-up time than modern solid-state units. Confirm the display integrates with the chart plotter.

EPIRB

An Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is a distress beacon that transmits to search-and-rescue satellites when activated. It is a last-resort safety device. Check the registration, battery expiry date, and hydrostatic release expiry. An expired EPIRB is a liability, not an asset.

Safety-Critical Electrical Items

Bilge Pump

An electric bilge pump automatically removes water from the bilge. It must work even when the engine is off, so it draws from the house bank. Check that the pump is correctly sized for the boat, that the float switch operates freely, and that there is a manual override at the helm. A high-water alarm on the bilge float circuit gives advance warning of ingress.

Navigation Lights

Navigation lights — red/green bow lights, white stern light, and masthead all-round white — are required by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) and must be shown between sunset and sunrise and in reduced visibility. Confirm all lights work and that the correct lights are fitted for the boat's length and use. LED replacements are common and reduce power draw significantly.

Electric Windlass

An electric anchor windlass is a high-current device — many draw 80–150 amps under load. It must be fused very close to the battery with an appropriately rated breaker or fuse. Check the condition of the windlass motor, the cable size from the battery, and that the foot switches at the bow are watertight and operational.

Common Electrical Problems to Look For When Buying

Electrical faults are among the most common — and most dangerous — problems found on used boats. Look out for the following warning signs:

Corroded connections — Green or white powder at terminal posts, ring terminals, and busbars indicates corrosion that increases resistance and generates heat. All connections should be clean and tinned.
Undersized wiring — Amateur installations often use automotive wire rated for air, not marine environments. Marine wiring should be tinned copper, correctly sized for the current load and run length, and rated for marine use (typically BS EN ISO 10133 or ABYC standards).
Missing fuses or circuit breakers — Every circuit must be protected close to its power source. Unfused runs are a fire risk. Inspect the main distribution panel for blanked breakers and trace any wiring that bypasses the panel.
Amateur installations — Look for mixed wire colours, exposed joins sealed only with electrical tape, wire runs held in place with cable ties to rigging, or unidentified cables disappearing into inaccessible spaces. These suggest work carried out without proper knowledge of marine electrical standards.
Old batteries past their service life — A battery bank that cannot hold charge is expensive to replace. Ask for the age of the batteries. Lead-acid batteries typically last 3–5 years with good maintenance; AGM similar. Lithium cells can last 10+ years. A load test will reveal capacity.
Tangled or overloaded distribution panels — A panel that has had circuits added haphazardly, with double-crimped wires and unlabelled breakers, suggests years of poorly managed modifications.

Shore Power: What to Know

Shore power brings 230V (or 110V) mains electricity from the marina to the boat via a heavy-duty inlet socket, typically a 16A or 32A IEC 60309 (blue industrial) connector in Europe. This is the same voltage that kills ashore and must be treated with equal respect afloat.

Galvanic Isolation

Shore power cables include an earth (ground) conductor that creates an electrical connection between your boat's metalwork and every other boat connected to the marina's electrical system. This shared earth path drives galvanic corrosion — electrochemical destruction of underwater metal fittings (propeller, shaft, skin fittings, keel bolts). A galvanic isolator fitted in the earth line blocks the low-voltage DC currents responsible for corrosion while still providing safety earth protection. An isolation transformer provides complete electrical separation and is the gold standard for long-term marina berths.

Shore Power Corrosion Risk

Even with a galvanic isolator, prolonged shore power connection in marinas with poor earthing infrastructure can cause significant underwater damage. Inspect the propeller, cutlass bearing area, and any bronze through-hulls for signs of pitting or dezincification. Zinc anodes on the hull, shaft, and propeller help sacrifice themselves in place of the boat's metalwork. Check that anodes are present and not fully depleted.

What a Marine Surveyor Checks in the Electrical System

Review all wiring for correct size, tinned copper construction, and adequate protection

Test VHF radio, chart plotter, and other navigation electronics
Verify the EPIRB registration and expiry dates
Inspect the shore power inlet, cable, and galvanic isolator
Check fusing and circuit breaker labelling throughout
Look for signs of amateur wiring, corrosion, and heat damage at terminals
