Pricing is the single most important decision you will make when selling your boat. Set it too high and the boat sits on the market for months, attracting suspicion from buyers who wonder what's wrong with it. Set it too low and you leave money on the table. Getting the price right from the start generates early interest, faster viewings, and a sale at a price that reflects the boat's true value.

Why Sellers Overprice

Overpricing is the most common seller mistake, and it's understandable. Most owners have spent significant money on their boat — not just the purchase price, but years of maintenance, upgrades, and equipment. It's natural to want to recoup that investment. But the market doesn't care what you spent. It cares only about what comparable boats are selling for right now. Upgrades add value, but rarely pound-for-pound, and depreciation affects every vessel regardless of how well it was maintained.

Step 1: Research Comparable Listings

Start with the market. Search for boats that match yours on the major listing platforms:

Same make and model (most important)
Within 3–5 years of your boat's build year
Similar overall condition (ready-to-sail vs. project)
Broadly similar equipment fit-out

Compile a list of current asking prices. This gives you a realistic range for where your boat should sit. Remember that asking prices are not sold prices — most boats sell for 5–15% below asking. If you can access historical sold price data (through a broker or industry publication), that is even more valuable.

Step 2: Adjust for Condition

Not all boats of the same model and year are equal. Adjust your price relative to the comparables based on:

Recent engine replacement or major overhaul — A new engine adds significant value, especially if hours are low.
New standing rigging — Rigging within the last 2–3 years is a meaningful plus on a sailboat.
Recent sails — A new mainsail and furling genoa can add £2,000–£6,000 of value depending on boat size.
Modern electronics — Chart plotter, AIS, autopilot, and radar from reputable brands within the last 5 years.
Recent antifouling and hull work — A freshly antifouled boat shows well and needs no immediate yard costs for the buyer.
Good service history — Documented, regular servicing is a premium indicator.
Extras included — Life raft in service, EPIRB registered and in date, dinghy and outboard, spare sails, ground tackle.

Factors That Reduce Value

High engine hours with no recent overhaul
Osmosis requiring treatment
Tired or aged sails
Standing rigging over 10 years old

Non-functioning or outdated electronics
Cosmetic damage (gelcoat cracks, worn upholstery, stained decks)

Step 3: Get a Professional Valuation

A qualified yacht broker will provide a free written market valuation as part of their pitch for the listing. Get valuations from two or three brokers — if they all come back within a similar range, that is your market price. If you receive one significantly higher than the others, treat it with scepticism; some brokers will inflate valuations to win the listing.

Marine surveyors also provide formal valuations as part of a condition survey. If you are planning to have a pre-listing survey done (which can be a useful selling tool), it will include a current market valuation.

Step 4: Understand Market Timing

Boat prices are not constant throughout the year. Demand peaks in late winter and spring, when buyers are planning their sailing season. A boat listed in January–March will attract more interest than the same boat listed in October. If you have flexibility on timing, aim to list in the early spring market.

Broader economic conditions also matter. In periods of high demand (as seen post-2020), prices rose substantially and sellers achieved full asking price. In slower markets, expect longer selling times and more negotiating room required.

Step 5: Set a Realistic Asking Price

Based on your research, set your asking price at the upper end of what the market supports — but within a realistic band. A good rule of thumb:

Price no more than 10% above the average of comparable sold prices.
Build in a little negotiating room — buyers expect to offer less and you need space to move without going below your minimum.
Know your walk-away price before you list — the minimum you will accept. Don't disclose this to buyers or brokers.

Step 6: Monitor and Adjust

If your boat has been on the market for more than 8–12 weeks with viewings but no offers, or fewer than 2–3 serious enquiries per month, the price is probably too high. A well-priced boat in a normal market generates genuine interest within the first few weeks.

A price reduction is a normal part of the process and is better done proactively (before the boat accumulates too many "days on market") than reactively after months of silence. Most listing platforms show the current price; price history is sometimes visible to buyers and brokers, so multiple small reductions look worse than one meaningful adjustment.

You own a 2010 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44i. Your research shows:

Three comparable 2009–2011 Sun Odyssey 44is currently listed at £105,000–£125,000
One sold last season for approximately £108,000 (from a broker contact)
Your boat has: new engine (2022, 180 hours), new sails (2021), life raft in service, good service history — but standing rigging is 9 years old

Your boat's strengths put it toward the top of the range; the ageing rigging brings it back slightly. A realistic asking price in this scenario would be approximately £118,000–£122,000, knowing that buyers will likely offer £108,000–£115,000 and final sale might close around £112,000–£116,000.

VAT Considerations

If you are based in the EU or UK, confirm whether VAT has been paid on your vessel and state this clearly in the listing. "VAT paid" is a significant selling point, as it means the buyer takes on no VAT liability. If VAT status is uncertain or unpaid, seek legal advice — the liability sits with the vessel, not just the original purchaser, and buyers (and their solicitors) will ask for documentary evidence.
