Introduction

The time and money you invest in preparing your boat for sale will pay back many times over. A well-presented, well-documented boat commands a higher price, sells faster, and encounters fewer obstacles during the survey process. Neglecting preparation — listing the boat as-is and hoping buyers will overlook its condition — almost always results in a longer sale at a lower price, with the survey throwing up expensive surprises that the buyer uses to demand concessions.

This guide covers practical preparation across four areas: cleaning and cosmetics, mechanical readiness, documentation, and safety equipment.

Cleaning and Presentation

Exterior

The exterior is the first thing a buyer sees — in photos and in person. It must be immaculate.

Wash and polish the topsides — A professionally polished gelcoat looks significantly better than a washed one. Gelcoat can be brought back to an impressive shine even on older boats with a cutting compound and polish. For fibreglass, this is a day's work and costs £150–£400 if done professionally.
Clean the antifouling — A pressure wash removes growth and leaves the underwater hull looking cared for during haul-out for viewing or survey.
Repair cosmetic gelcoat damage — Rub marks on the topsides, chips and scratches in high-traffic areas. Minor gelcoat repairs are cheap and make a significant visual difference.
Clean stainless steel — Use a stainless cleaner to remove rust staining and water marks from rails, stanchions, and deck fittings.
Clean the coachroof and deck — Non-slip surfaces accumulate grime; scrub them thoroughly.
Remove personal items from the cockpit — Fenders, ropes, buckets, and personal gear make the cockpit look cluttered. For photos and viewings, the cockpit should be clear and inviting.

Interior

Buyers spend a significant amount of time below decks evaluating whether they could live on this boat. An interior that smells damp, looks cluttered, or is visibly tired sends a negative message that is hard to overcome.

Air the boat out thoroughly — Open all hatches, lockers, and storage areas for several days before photos or viewings. Musty smells are extremely off-putting and difficult to explain away.
Deep clean every surface — Galley, heads, saloon, cabins, and navigation station. Pay attention to areas buyers will open: drawers, lockers, the engine compartment, the lazarette.
Clean or replace soft furnishings — Stained or worn cushions are a common first impression killer. Recovering cabin cushions is relatively affordable (£500–£1,500 for a typical cruiser) and transforms the interior.
Clear out personal effects — Remove anything that is not part of the boat's equipment. A boat stuffed with the seller's personal gear feels smaller and harder to evaluate.
Address any mould or mildew — Clean with appropriate solutions and then address the source (ventilation, hatch seals, condensation).
Check all lights and replace dead bulbs — A functioning cabin lighting system shows attention to detail.

Engine Bay

The engine bay reveals more about a boat's maintenance standard than almost anything else. A clean, dry engine bay is a powerful reassurance to buyers; an oily, rusty bay raises immediate questions about what else has been neglected.

Degrease the engine, bilge, and surrounding surfaces.
Touch up any surface rust on the engine block with appropriate paint.
Check all hoses for perishing and replace if necessary — these are cheap parts.
Wipe down wiring runs and label anything that is not labelled.

Mechanical Readiness

Do not wait for the survey to discover mechanical problems. Addressing them proactively means you control the cost and the narrative.

Engine Service

Commission a full engine service before listing:

Oil and oil filter change
Fuel filter replacement
Raw water impeller replacement
Belt inspection and replacement
Coolant check and top-up
Check exhaust elbow condition

Keep the service receipt. This is gold in your documentation folder — it shows the buyer that the engine has been recently maintained and removes a common negotiating point from the survey.

Seacocks

Service all seacocks — they should be operable (turned on and off) without excessive force. A seized seacock is a safety issue that a surveyor will flag as urgent. Servicing typically involves removing, greasing, and reinstalling — a boatyard job of an hour or two per seacock, or a DIY job for confident owners.

Rigging (Sailboats)

Have a professional rig inspection carried out — particularly on the standing rigging and swage terminals.
Replace the running rigging if it is worn or UV-degraded.
Lubricate the furling drum and all blocks and sheaves.
If the standing rigging is due for replacement (10+ years old), price it into the boat accordingly and disclose it clearly — don't expect buyers not to notice.

Electrics

Test every light, instrument, and piece of electronics aboard.
Fix or replace anything that doesn't work.
Clean battery terminals and check battery condition (most chandlers have a free battery tester).
Ensure the bilge pump (manual and electric) works correctly.

Documentation

A well-organised documentation folder is one of the most powerful tools a seller can have. It demonstrates responsible ownership and removes uncertainty — a major source of buyer hesitation.

What to Gather

Registration certificate — The original document showing you as registered owner. This is transferred to the buyer at closing.
Engine service logbook — All service receipts and records in date order.
Maintenance receipts — Any significant work done: rigging, sails, electronics, osmosis treatment, antifouling.
Previous survey reports — Even old surveys are useful; they show the condition at the time and allow buyers and surveyors to compare.
Equipment manuals — Engine manual, autopilot manual, chart plotter manual. Buyers will be grateful to have these; missing manuals are a minor negative.
VAT documentation — Evidence that VAT was paid on the boat: the original purchase invoice showing VAT, or a C88 customs form if imported. In the EU, VAT status is a material fact that affects the buyer's liability.
MMSI registration — The registered MMSI number for the VHF radio and AIS. Note that MMSI numbers are registered to owners, not vessels — the buyer will need to re-register. Include the current registration document so they can identify which authority issued it.
Insurance certificate — Not transferable, but useful as evidence of the vessel's consistent use and value history.
Any outstanding warranty documentation — For recently replaced engines, electronics, or sails.

What If You Don't Have the Documents?

Missing documentation is common, especially on older vessels with multiple owners. Where documents are genuinely lost:

Contact the registration authority (e.g., UK Ship Register, USCG) for certified copies.
Contact the original seller or their estate for VAT evidence if needed.
Commission a current survey — this documents the boat's present condition and provides a professional valuation, partly offsetting the absence of historical records.

Safety Equipment

Out-of-date safety equipment is one of the most common survey findings and one of the most easily addressed before listing. Buyers frequently use safety equipment shortfalls to negotiate price reductions — yet the actual cost to fix them is relatively low.

Pre-Listing Safety Checklist

Life raft — Check the service label. If it's due within the next 12 months, get it serviced now. Cost: £150–£400 depending on size and type.
EPIRB — Check battery expiry and registration. Register it in your name if it's not already registered — this is a legal requirement in most countries and a safety essential. Cost to replace if needed: £250–£600.
Flares — Check expiry dates. Replace any out-of-date flares. A full set of in-date coastal flares costs approximately £100–£150.
Fire extinguishers — Check the charge indicator and service date. Replace if discharged or overdue for service.
Life jackets — Check auto-inflation mechanisms and service dates. Typically requires annual service for auto-inflation jackets.
Smoke and gas detectors — Test and replace batteries. Replace units over 5 years old.

Spending £300–£600 on safety equipment catch-up before listing removes a predictable category of survey findings that buyers would otherwise use to extract a price reduction of £1,000–£2,000.

Before You List: A Final Walk-Through

Before creating your listing and taking photos, do a final critical walk-through of the boat asking: "If I were a buyer seeing this for the first time, what would concern me?" Address every honest answer. Then ask a trusted friend — ideally one who has bought a boat or is an experienced sailor — to do the same walk-through and give you honest feedback.

The goal is not a perfect boat. Every used boat has imperfections. The goal is a boat that is clean, well-documented, mechanically sound, and honestly presented — one where a buyer's first impression is confidence, not concern.
